THINKING ABOUT UPGRADING YOUR CHILD’S INSTRUMENT?

For several years now your child has worked to perfect their skills on a musical instrument. As they begin high school you might want to consider purchasing a step-up instrument. There are several reasons to think about a new instrument. Many beginner-level instruments inhibit the student’s ability to produce a more mature sound since student-line instruments are generally slightly smaller in construction than intermediate or advanced models. Most of the instruments your child started on are considered beginner-level instruments. Most rental instruments are beginner-model instruments as well. These are generally smaller in bore size (the inside diameter of the tubing) and utilize cheaper materials. Step-up instruments are larger in bore and feature additional keys or valves which permit easier playing in the high ranges often found in high school level band music.

*BEFORE PURCHASING AN INSTRUMENT, PLEASE SPEAK TO THE BAND DIRECTOR.  Mr Freeman will be able to guide you on the instrument purchasing experience, steer you towards the instrument that is best suited for you, and help with where to buy your instrument.

*ALWAYS PLAY-TEST A HORN BEFORE BUYING IT.  Just like you would take a car for a test drive, if you are going to spend that much money on an instrument, you want to make sure it is the correct one. For Brass and Woodwind players, Dillon Music in Woodbridge is the best place to go and play test instruments. The Music Shop in Boonton will also let you play test instruments.

*A QUALITY MOUTHPIECE IS EQUALLY AS IMPORTANT AS A QUALITY INSTRUMENT. If you can’t afford a new instrument quite yet, start with a quality mouthpiece. The mouthpiece produces the type of sound that the horn can make.

*RESEARCH IS IMPORTANT.  You want to make sure you get the best instrument for your money so research is key.  You can start with the Woodwind and Brasswind (www.WWBW.com).  It’s a great place to compare models/prices.  However, there may be better places to buy your specific instrument.  Please consult with Mr Freeman.
